It means the output failed to reflect the few details that should have made the piece non-substitutable. Those details might be customer pain, operational reality, product constraints, evidence, tradeoffs, or decision logic. If they are not explicit in the task, the model cannot preserve them.

What Actually Works

What works is creating non-negotiable anchors before generation. Give the model real source material. State what claim the piece must make. Define what must be excluded. Identify the one or two distinctions that cannot be flattened into generic language. When the model has constraints that matter, it is less likely to drift back to the center.

It also helps to change the output contract. Instead of asking for a finished article or polished paragraph immediately, ask for a claim map, a list of tensions, a ranking of arguments, or a summary of what makes this case different from adjacent cases. Those intermediate outputs force the model to reveal whether it understands the differentiating structure. If it does not, a polished draft will not fix the problem.

Another useful change is to compare the output against a failure standard, not an aesthetic standard. Ask: what information here could have been written about almost anything? Which lines contain no real cost, no real tradeoff, no real choice? This makes genericity visible as a structural flaw rather than a vibe.

Finally, accept that some specificity must come from the human system, not from the model. Distinctive output comes from distinctive inputs, and distinctive inputs usually come from real decisions. If no one has chosen the angle, the constraint, the audience priority, or the evidence threshold, the model cannot manufacture a strong point of view responsibly. It can only imitate one.
